Product Description

OKAPI Zinc Plus contains the legally approved maximum amount of 12,000 mg of zinc per kilogram, as organically bound zinc chelate. It is a highly dosed zinc supplement that can be used to prevent deficiencies during periods of increased need or when zinc deficiency is confirmed through blood tests, helping to replenish the body’s stores more quickly.

Zinc is an essential trace element for the body, involved in over 300 known metabolic reactions. As such, the consequences of insufficient zinc supply can be far-reaching. Horses prone to skin, coat, or hoof problems, those with sensitive respiratory systems, or those with impaired detoxification, such as in cases of Kryptopyrroluria (KPU), can benefit from closely monitoring their zinc levels and addressing any deficiencies in a timely manner. During the coat change season, the body loses higher amounts of zinc, which is incorporated into the hair and naturally lost when the hair falls out. Therefore, zinc requirements are particularly high in spring and autumn.

OKAPI Zinc Plus is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds.

Mineral feed and mineral supplements, such as OKAPI Copper Plus or Zinc Plus, should generally not be fed together in the same meal whenever possible. This is because many minerals can interact or compete during absorption in the gut. This can lead to larger amounts of the mineral being excreted in the manure, which is wasteful and does not contribute to the desired improved nutrition of the horse.

Therefore, we recommend giving the opposing minerals, zinc and copper, only alternately, for example, on a weekly basis. Furthermore, you can support mineral absorption by ensuring that zinc- or copper-rich feed is not given at the same meal as the mineral supplement. In such cases, you can feed the mineral supplement in the morning and offer Zinc Plus or Copper Plus in a handful of soaked Hay cobs in the evening. Then, you can alternate between OKAPI Zinc Plus for one week and OKAPI Copper Plus for the following week to avoid competition between these two minerals in the metabolism.

Feeding recommendations

We recommend feeding OKAPI Zinc Plus for a period of at least 4 to 8 weeks.

After this phase, it may be helpful to have a reassessment by a veterinarian or qualified nutrition to determine whether further supplementation is necessary.

OKAPI Zinc Plus can be directly incorporated into the horse’s existing feed.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dosage for OKAPI Zinc Plus, follow these steps:

1. Determine your horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be measured using a scale, weight tape, or apps like the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal, available for free on Google Play and Apple Store).

2. Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The recommended daily amount is 2-4 scoops per day (1 scoop = 16 g).

3. Adjust the dosage: If, for example, your horse weighs 300 kg, the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. TDaily dose (64 g) / 600 kg × Horse’s weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (32 g).

This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount of OKAPI Zinc Plus for horses of varying weights.

Important note: This supplement should not exceed 1% of the horse’s total daily ration due to the higher content of trace elements compared to complete feeds.
