Promotes a healthy gut environment
The Inca people used the inner bark of the Lapacho tree as an all-round remedy in their traditional medicine, and it is still widely used by the inhabitants of South America today. In relation to its popularity in its native region, Lapacho bark remains relatively unknown in Europe. The Lapacho tree grows in the rainforests of South America, where its bark is harvested, with the inner bark being used. As the bark grows back relatively quickly, the tree is not permanently harmed by careful harvesting.
Various compounds have been scientifically identified in Lapacho bark, including naphthoquinones (lapachol, ß-lapachone), flavonoids, anthraquinones, and benzoid derivatives. The administration of powdered Lapacho bark can help support the horse in balancing its natural microbiome (“gut flora”) in the colon after stressful periods, such as feeding haylage, brewer’s yeast, or other potentially problematic feed. It is therefore commonly given as part of colon restoration measures and during feed transitions.
OKAPI Lapacho Bark is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds.
OKAPI Lapacho Bark can be easily combined with other products. We recommend combining it with OKAPI Bitter Herbs or OKAPI Intestinal Support Herbs.
We recommend administering OKAPI Lapacho Bark in cycles, for example, as part of gut-restoring measures, combined with Bitter Herbs for 6 weeks. After this period, it is important to observe how the horse’s gut environment develops. If the horse’s digestion does not stabilise sufficiently, we suggest consulting a qualified therapist who can accurately determine the underlying causes of the digestive disturbances and advise on the best course of action. For help finding a qualified therapist, simply reach out to office@sanoanimal.com — the team at Sanoanimal will be happy to assist.
OKAPI Lapacho Bark can be given dry over the feed, brewed as tea, or mixed into wet feed. It is ground and does not need to be boiled, as the powdered bark is easily digestible by horses.
To calculate the appropriate dosage for OKAPI Lapacho bark, follow these steps:
1. Determine your horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be measured using a scale, weight tape, or apps like the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal, available for free on Google Play and Apple Store).
2. Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The recommended daily amount is 1-2 ML daily (1 scoop = 12 g).
3. Adjust the dosage: If, for example, your horse weighs 300 kg, the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. Daily dose (24 g) / 600 kg × Horse’s weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (12 g).
This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount of OKAPI Lapacho bark for horses of varying weights.
- 500g sufficient for approximately 3–7 weeks
- 1,000g sufficient for multiple horses
