Supports the physiological pH balance in the gut
Clinoptilolites are a class of minerals that naturally occur, similar to zeolites, bentonites, or montmorillonites. They are approved as technological additives in animal feed regulations, and they may also have a physiological effect in the horse’s digestive tract.
While bentonite and montmorillonite primarily bind water – and therefore all substances dissolved in water, functioning somewhat like “cat litter” in the horse’s gut – clinoptilolites can perform an ion exchange on their surface. As a result, they act as acid regulators and may help stabilise pH levels in the digestive tract. Horses with a low faecal pH, for example due to previous haylage feeding or hindgut dysbiosis, may benefit from using Prodic.
However, due to its ability to bind minerals, we recommend not feeding Prodic together with mineral-containing feed and, where possible, adhering to a two-week feeding cycle to allow the mineral balance to naturally reset.
OKAPI Prodic is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds.
OKAPI Prodic can be fed in combination with other feed products, such as herbal mixtures or Haycobs, but it should be fed with a gap of at least two hours from mineral-containing feed to avoid the binding of minerals by the Clinoptilolite.
Prodic contains, among other ingredients, Klinoptilolite, a naturally occurring mineral capable of performing ion exchange on its surface. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of potentially binding some minerals present in the feed. To avoid disruptions in the horse’s mineral balance, we recommend giving Prodic at a different mealtime from mineral-containing feed whenever possible, and not feeding it continuously. A well-established rhythm is a two-week cycle: feed for one week, then take a week off.
OKAPI Prodic can be easily mixed with soaked hay cobs. Some horses may be reluctant to eat Prodic. In such cases, it can be helpful to start with a smaller amount, which can be given through the moistened hay.
To calculate the appropriate dosage for OKAPI Prodic, follow these steps:
1. Determine your horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be measured using a scale, weight tape, or apps like the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal, available for free on Google Play and Apple Store).
2. Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The recommended daily amount is 3-5 scoops (1 scoop = 20 g) per day.
3. Adjust the dosage: If, for example, your horse weighs 300 kg, the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. The calculation would be: Daily dose (100 g) / 600 kg × Horse’s weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (50 g).
This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount of OKAPI Prodic for horses of varying weights.
- 1,200g sufficient for approximately 1–2 weeks
- 3,000g sufficient for approximately 4–7 weeks
- 4,500g sufficient for approximately 1.5–2.5 months or for multiple horses
OKAPI Prodic contains: Grape seed meal, soybean oil 1%
Technological additives: 780,000 mg Clinoptilolite of sedimentary origin (1g568)
Soya oil is used in OKAPI Prodic as a dust-binding agent and unfortunately cannot be avoided. Otherwise, the powder would be too fine to process, and horses could also experience problems inhaling dust if it were added dry to their concentrate feed. In general, we – like our partner Sanoanimal – advise against feeding oils to horses. Adding oil, for example to concentrate feed, can place a considerable burden on digestion and metabolism. In such cases, significant amounts of oil are usually poured over the feed. In Prodic, however, the oil content is only 1% and can therefore be regarded as unproblematic, also with regard to the recommended dosage.
We are working to replace soya oil with sunflower oil, as we view soya products critically for ecological reasons. However, due to the current manufacturing process, this is not yet possible. We ensure that the soya oil we use is non-GMO. In addition, our soya oil does not contain soy oligosaccharides (stachyose), which are the components in soybean meal or soybean extraction meal that can make these products problematic for horses.
Overall, we consider the soya oil contained in Prodic to be harmless to the horse’s health. Nevertheless, we continue to look for an alternative in order not to further support the cultivation of soya.
