What is OKAPI L-Carnitine Plus?
L-Carnitine Plus is a derivative of amino acids that is naturally produced in the horse’s body, although not all horses have sufficient levels. It plays a crucial role in energy metabolism by helping to convert long-chain fatty acids—particularly in heart muscle cells—into usable energy. The heart muscle is a highly energy-demanding organ that needs a constant supply of energy to function at its best. As such, it is specially adapted to efficiently use various energy sources, including long-chain fatty acids.
The heart is one of the most L-carnitine-rich organs in the horse’s body, as it obtains a large portion of its required energy by processing these fatty acids. In contrast, skeletal muscle does not rely on this type of energy production to the same extent. This is why supplementing with L-Carnitine Plus is particularly beneficial for supporting the heart muscle.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?
To calculate the appropriate dosage for OKAPI L-Carnitine Plus, follow these steps:
1. Determine your horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be measured using a scale, weight tape, or apps like the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal, available for free on Google Play and Apple Store).
2. Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The suggested daily amount is 1-2 scoops (1 scoop = 4 g), which equals 4-8 g per day.
3. Adjust the dosage: If, for example, your horse weighs 300 kg, the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. The calculation would be: Daily dose (8 g) ÷ 600 kg × Horse weight (300 kg) = Daily ration (4 g).
This calculation method allows you to determine the appropriate amount of OKAPI L-Carnitine Plus for horses of varying weights.
