OKAPI Senior Support is a complementary feed for horses from around 18 years of age. As horses get older, their nutritional requirements change, particularly in relation to amino acids and other carefully selected nutrients. OKAPI Senior Support has been specially developed to complement the daily ration of older horses.
The product provides essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and threonine, which support protein metabolism. The formula is complemented by L-carnitine as well as plant-based ingredients such as hawthorn, ashwagandha, mate, frankincense and grape seed meal.
Spirulina and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) complete the composition.
OKAPI Senior Support has been specially developed for older horses that, from around 18 years of age, benefit from targeted support as part of their daily ration.
It is suitable for:
- Senior horses, to help adapt nutrient intake to the changing needs that come with age.
- Older horses in light work or retirement, whose intake of amino acids, selected botanicals and other nutrients is to be supported.
- Ponies and small horses that require age-related nutritional support, with the amount adjusted to body weight.
OKAPI Senior Support complements the daily ration with high-quality amino acids and selected plant-based ingredients specially chosen for the needs of older horses.
Yes, OKAPI Senior Support can easily be combined with other OKAPI products to complement the daily ration.
OKAPI Senior Support can be fed long-term as a complement to the daily ration once the horse has reached around 18 years of age, or if there are individual signs indicating a changed nutritional requirement associated with ageing.
There is no need to limit the feeding period. Regular use supports the continuous supply of high-quality amino acids and other carefully selected nutrients tailored to the needs of older horses.
It is important to review the ration regularly and adapt it to the horse’s current needs, particularly if there are changes in health, management or level of work.
OKAPI Senior Support can simply be mixed into a handful of soaked hay cobs, mixed into feed, or sprinkled over slightly damp hay.
As some horses may find the taste unfamiliar at first, it is recommended to start with a small amount and increase this gradually until the recommended daily amount is reached.
To calculate the appropriate amount of OKAPI Senior Support for your horse, follow these steps:
1. Determine your horse’s weight
The horse’s weight can be determined by weighing, measuring with a weight tape, or by using apps such as the BCI App from our partner Sanoanimal, available free of charge in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
2. Use the feeding recommendation as your starting point
The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a horse weighing 600 kg. The recommended daily amount is 2 scoops per day (1 scoop = 15 g).
3. Adjust the amount to your horse’s weight
For example, for a horse weighing 300 kg:
30 g ÷ 600 kg × 300 kg = 15 g per day
This calculation can be used to determine the appropriate amount for horses of different weights.
- 900 g is sufficient for approx. 1–2 months
- 1400 g is sufficient for approx. 1.5–3 months

Complementary feed for horses
OKAPI Senior Support can be mixed into a handful of soaked hay cobs or sainfoin. As some horses may be reluctant to eat it, it is recommended to start with a small amount and gradually increase it to help the senior get used to the taste. For further nutritional support, we recommend feeding OKAPI Seniormineral, which provides older horses with an optimal supply of minerals, trace elements, and vitamins. In addition, the generally increased protein requirement in older horses should be met by feeding OKAPI Sainfoin or OKAPI Vitalcobs, which can also be soaked together with hay cobs (e.g. OKAPI Heucobs Sugar Light).
