High-quality amino acids for muscle development
1.500g sufficient for approximately 4 - 8 Weeks
OKAPI Spirulina is often compared to Chlorella due to their similar properties, although they are fundamentally different. Chlorella is a freshwater algae, while Spirulina is a type of cyanobacterium, which also thrives in freshwater. Spirulina has long been a valued feed ingredient due to its exceptionally high protein content and excellent amino acid profile for horses. This is why it is included in many supplements for sport horses, which have an increased need for valuable amino acids to support muscle development. However, other horses with higher protein requirements, such as youngstock, broodmares, or seniors, often benefit from supplementation over six to eight weeks, especially in the spring and autumn.
In addition, Spirulina contains a particularly high level of chlorophyll, the green plant pigment that horses typically consume in large quantities through fresh, lush pasture grass. However, not every horse has access to pasture—either due to health reasons or because there is insufficient grazing land or growth. In such cases, Spirulina can be offered as a supplement, as chlorophyll is currently believed to positively influence the horse’s natural detoxification system. For this reason, horses especially benefit from Spirulina during the times of coat change when it is mixed into their regular feed.
OKAPI Spirulina Pellets is suitable for adult horses of all ages and breeds.
OKAPI Spirulina Pellets can be easily combined with other products. We recommend pairing it with our Detox Herbs.
We recommend feeding it for a limited period of six to eight weeks. If Spirulina is used for a longer time, for example throughout the winter due to limited pasture access, it has proven effective to feed it every other week – one week on, one week off, and so on. Spirulina can be combined very well with our OKAPI Detox Herbs.
OKAPI Spirulina Pellets can be easily added to your horse’s existing feed.
To calculate the appropriate dose for OKAPI Spirulina Pellets, the following steps can be followed:
Determine the horse’s weight: The horse’s weight can be determined by either weighing it, measuring with a tape measure, or using apps such as the BCI app from our partner Sanoanimal (available for free on Google Play and Apple Store).
Follow the feeding recommendation: The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a horse weighing 600 kg. The recommended daily amount is 1–2 scoops per day (1 scoop = 15 g).
Adjust the dosage: If, for example, the horse weighs 300 kg, the dosage needs to be adjusted accordingly. The calculation would be: daily dose (30 g) / 600 kg × horse’s weight (300 kg) = daily ration (15 g).
This method ensures the correct amount is determined based on the horse’s weight.
OKAPI Spirulina Pellets contain: Spirulina platensis, pelleted.
Our Spirulina Pellets are pelleted without any “pelleting aids.” As with all our products, we provide a completely transparent declaration – meaning we list everything that’s inside on both the label and in our online shop. This includes any additives that wouldn’t normally require declaration under animal feed regulations, because we want to avoid situations where a horse reacts to an undeclared additive and the owner doesn’t know why. Even though we don’t add sugar or oil, most horses that usually refuse Spirulina powder tend to accept our Spirulina Pellets happily, making them easy to feed dry along with the regular bucket feed.
