What is OKAPI Sainfoin?

Sainfoin, traditionally known as “healthy hay” (from the French sain foin), is a time-tested forage plant that is now gaining renewed attention in modern horse feeding. Although it has been largely replaced in agriculture over the past decades due to lower yields compared to alfalfa, its nutritional qualities make it a highly valuable feed component. Compared to alfalfa, sainfoin not only offers a higher overall protein value, but more importantly, a superior amino acid profile. It is particularly rich in essential amino acids such as lysine, methionine and threonine. This allows the horse to utilise protein more efficiently for building and maintaining body tissues, while reducing excess nitrogen excretion. Sainfoin can therefore be considered a premium starch-free conditioning feed and an excellent addition for horses that require additional nutritional support due to age, workload or specific needs.

Young horses in growth, performance horses, as well as broodmares during pregnancy and lactation benefit in particular from its high-quality protein. In addition, sainfoin naturally contains condensed tannins (also known as catechins), which are widely found in plants such as green tea, blackberries or birch bark. These plant compounds belong to the group of tannins and can support normal digestive processes. Among other properties, they help bind proteins in the gut in a way that may improve their utilisation. This makes sainfoin not only valuable for its own protein content, but also supportive for the overall use of protein from the total diet. This is especially relevant when horses are fed low-nutrient hay or when rations are extended with straw. In such cases, high-quality protein sources like sainfoin help maintain muscle mass rather than promoting unwanted weight gain.

Another practical advantage: when soaked, sainfoin is ideal for mixing in less palatable but necessary supplements. Its naturally strong taste makes it easier to feed horses reliably, even in more challenging feeding situations.

Sainfoin is rightly experiencing a revival in modern horse nutrition. Its versatility and nutritional quality make it a valuable component of a balanced feeding approach.

OKAPI Sainfoin is pressed into 8 mm pellets, creating a uniform, compact structure and supporting a fibre length that aligns with the horse’s natural chewing and breakdown of forage.

Is OKAPI Sainfoin suitable for my horse?

Yes, sainfoin is generally suitable for all horses. Its high-quality protein and balanced amino acid profile make it a valuable addition to diets across different ages, workloads and individual needs.

Can I combine sainfoin with other feeds?

Yes, OKAPI Sainfoin can be easily combined with other feeds. It is recommended to feed it alongside a high-quality mineral supplement, such as OKAPI Pasturemineral Balance.

When soaked, sainfoin is particularly useful for mixing in less palatable but necessary supplements, helping ensure consistent intake.

Feeding recommendations

How long should I feed OKAPI Sainfoin?

The feeding duration depends on your horse’s individual needs. Sainfoin can be used both short-term, for example during periods of increased nutritional demand, and long-term as part of a consistent feeding routine.

Regular monitoring of your horse’s condition and body weight is recommended to ensure optimal feeding management.

How is OKAPI Sainfoin fed?

OKAPI Sainfoin should always be fed soaked.Add approximately three parts water to one part pellets (1:3) and allow them to fully absorb the water before feeding. Warm water speeds up the soaking process, while cold water can also be used but requires a longer soaking time, ideally overnight. Feed at a lukewarm temperature to ensure comfort and safety.

How do I calculate the correct dosage for my horse?

To calculate the appropriate dosage for OKAPI Sainfoin, follow these steps:

1. Determine your horse’s weight
Your horse’s weight can be determined using scales, a weight tape or an app such as the BCI App from Sanoanimal, available free of charge from Google Play and Apple Store.

2. Follow the feeding recommendation
The general recommendation for OKAPI products is based on a 600 kg horse. The recommended daily amount of OKAPI Sainfoin is between 1 and 3 kilograms of dry matter.

3. Adjust the amount to your horse’s weight
For example, for a horse weighing 300 kg:
Lower range: 1000g ÷ 600 kg × 300 kg = 500 g per day
Lower range: 3000g ÷ 600 kg × 300 kg = 1500 g per day

This calculation can be used to determine the appropriate amount for horses of different weights.

- 18kg sufficient for approximately 2–4 weeks

Feeding Instructions

OKAPI Sainfoin is especially suitable for older horses, poor doers, and those with gastrointestinal problems. Sainfoin contains a high content of essential amino acids and condensed tannins, which makes it a perfect grain-free concentrated feed for all types of horses.

The pellets are made from the whole plant. Due to its pressed structure, OKAPI Sainfoin should only be fed soaked. Use at least three times the amount of water and allow it to swell until fully disintegrated. Warm water reduces the swelling time. It is pressed without the addition of adhesives.

OKAPI Sainfoin is not a complete feed and should therefore be complemented with a high-quality OKAPI mineral feed and sufficient amounts of roughage. We recommend offering  OKAPI Four-Season Feed as well as OKAPI Wild Seeds for enrichment of secondary plant substances.
